We built a den, cooked some marshmallows on a fire, ran around and then headed back to the house for some party food - all within 2 hours!
Its amazing the rate a bunch of 6 year-olds will work at. I really can't imagine how their teacher manages to plan enough activities to keep them going for a whole day. They set about making the den with so much enthusiasm.
The marshmallow toasting was equally speedy and enthusiastic. If we'd had more than two packs I'm sure they'd have been gobbled up too.
Angus had requested a chocolate cake. Last year it was 'a rocket' and the previous year 'an aeroplane with a dolphin on top'. I was mightily relieved with the chocolate request. Much less challenging. I decided to try a new recipe and spotted a Claire Macdonald one in The Scotsman called Double Dark Chocolate. Its probably more of a pudding style cake, its very gooey and rich, but we all really enjoyed it. You can find the recipe here. Something particularly handy about this one is that you can make it all in one pan providing you choose quite a big one to melt the butter and chocolate. Everything else can just be mixed up in there too. Less washing up - but fewer bowls to lick, so there is a bit of a trade-off!
I've taken this picture of mum's kitchen before it was invaded by lots of little boys to show how well Beth's cushion fits in. Isn't it fabby?

You know, I'm so daft, I was looking at the last photo and thinking how nice the set up and food was and didn't even spot the cushion 'til I read the comment! Thanks for that :)
You are most brave taking the boys to the woods (it's still very cold over here, even with the dry weather), although it looks great fun and that's one fabulous den, it's the kind of thing my boys love doing, 'Gran' cooks sausages outside on a campfire every time she visits and it's a highlight.
Glad to read a good time was had by all and happy B-Day to Angus!
Beth - I think its one of the best things about grandparents - the little traditions that get built up. My parents take them tree climbing, tree planting and grandy (my dad) gives great 'donkey' rides. John's parents specialise in reading books and lots of puddings! Juliex
I spotted the cushion from the linen cat as soon as I saw the photo! It is lovely, I've got a bit of a thing for round cushions at the moment.
The party boys looked like they were having a great time, a good idea for 6yr old boys. I will bear this in mind when N reaches that age (only 4 1/2 years to go!
Anne - it worked really well altho' I wouldn't have wanted to have too many more children. I bet the 4 1/2 years will pass pretty fast. Juliex
Hi, thanks for stopping by , we live in Sunderland so you weren't too far off :-). I've just had a quick look back through your posts , I'm very jealous of the river at the end of your street , it looks just lovely.
Lisa x
Hi Lisa - yes we are very lucky and I really enjoy the river, especially when the sun shines. It looks lovely around you too. Juliex
Your Mum has a lovely kitchen. I would like to have seen a picture after the boys had invaded it!
Simone - yes she does have a great kitchen, sadly mine isn't quite up to that - its about the size of her table!
Lets just say we had a fair bit of wiping and sweeping up to do after the guests had left! Juliex
