Well, strictly speaking, it was the children who were interested in the full submersion, that bit is rather less attractive to me and John.
A couple of days ago the weather was dry and not too cold so we rushed down to Gullane. We kept the children out of the water as long as we could - we knew that once they'd been in they would be pretty chilly and it would be time to pack up.
Katie had so much fun playing with her brothers and sister, though occasionally she wished she could move as fast as them and that it wasn't such a struggle to keep up.
We had a mini olympics session in which Finn completely trounced me and John at the 'long distance', maybe 400m, race. We were both a little subdued after that reminder of our elderliness.
Angus and Islay, sometimes the most bickersome of children - and, yes, I'm sure that is a word or at least it should be - can, at other times, be the very best of friends. The beach brought out the best of this and they had a wonderful time making a sandcastle together and later playing on their boogie boards.
Apart from feeling rather humiliated John and I enjoyed the fresh air and seeing everyone have so much fun.
We managed to avoid getting too wet although, actually, for the North Sea it wasn't all that cold.
I have no idea where they learnt to pose like they are in the photo above. It certainly wasn't from me - I can't even remember to stand with my feet together.
I'm so pleased we ticked this off our summer list. Though, of course, if we have another suitable day we'll be back again...............just with shorter races.
Or perhaps we'll handicap our eldest until he learns to be less pleased at beating us.

Dear Julie,
What a great post - your children look so happy. Simple pleasures are often the best. We did the same a few weeks ago when we went to Lyme Regis - but I didn't get involved in any running!
June
Looks like you are all having so much fun, I love nothing better that spending a day at the beach.
What a wonderful day at the beach - lucky you! The photos of Katie with her brother are very sweet.
sounds like a great day at the beach! Lovely family photos you got too - nice memories to look back on it in years to come.
The North Sea, even in August, brrrrrr lol You just need to remember to pack your spikes next time ;o)
I totally agree about the 'elderleyness' if that is even such a word lol... It looks like they all had such a fun time and something they will remember :-)
Looks like you all had such fun on the beach! I love the beach poses. Did Katie have her first taste of sand?

Katie is growing up so fast
What a beautiful family you have there Julie
When you come down under to NZ I'll show you some Kiwi beaches xxx
Another lovely day out - your photos are fantastic :-) Shame you got out run though, didnt you try the old mum says go trick and give yourself a head start?!
They all look so grown up. Maxi can not wait till next summer when he is old enough to take surfing lessons!
Aww, I'm sure he didn't beat you by that much?! It's been gorgeous this last week, perfect beach weather - unfortunately Ollie just likes to shovel handful after handful of sand in his mouth so we can't stay at the beach long just now! Your kids look like they had a fantastic time! :) x
It looks like a great day out - we were desperate for a beach day this year but have failed miserably. Our nearest spot for actual water playing is Camber Sands - sadly it's packed on a sunny day and not always much fun. We need to buy everyone wet suits, we could have done with those when swimming in the river in Yorkshire recently. Glad you had such a good time. Bx
Wetsuits make a huge difference, I think they're a great investment. juliex
