The first was for a baby boy. Its a similar style to Karen's and there's an overlap of fabrics too. Maybe because there aren't so many good fabrics for little boys?
I put quite a lot of thought into the fabrics. M and I have been friends since we started university where we both studied forestry and ecology. I wanted to choose patterns that would mean something to her. The rockets is for her dad who was a space scientist. He was very ill when her baby was born and we knew he wouldn't survive long. Tragically he died earlier this month. I hope the rocket material might be a little connection for M and baby F in the future. M and I used to do a lot of walking and camping so the green and blue triangle 'Tent' fabric is a reminder of those days - plus I think the little tents look like a forest of trees which is also appropriate to us. The Alexander Henry Zoo fabric is just too lovely to miss out and it seemed appropriate for an ecologist. I backed the quilt in a bit of very soft old beadspread.
I think this quilt was heavily influenced by ones that I remember the very talented Manda of Treefall Design making - sometime last year?
For some reason I forgot to take a picture of the other one which was for a girl. I think I preferred it - I used a mix of reds and pinks to try and make it girly but not too babyish. I backed it in a lovely soft organic cotton flannel and added flannel borders too so it was a bit bigger and very cosy.
I suggested that the quilts could be used as playmats or nappy mats as well but since I used a very soft drapey 100% cotton wadding I think they were probably more suited to being quilts.
