Two slices of stale bread and......

....a whole lot of fun for one little girl.

I'm struggling with a stinking cold at the moment, this one seems to come with a sore throat and ears for good measure, so I'm going for the easiest forms of childcare.

Feeding the ducks worked very well altho' it could have done with lasting just a bit longer - it would help if it took longer to get there but since our street runs down to the river and Islay can scoot pretty fast it only takes about two minutes to get there.

So next we had a little potter about and looked at how pretty the mummy mallards are::

Tried not to get any closer to daddy (I think?) swan::

And had a look at where mummy (probably?) swan was sitting on the nest::

I did a bit of experimenting with a couple of squash we bought at the farmer's market on Saturday. I made a lentil slush with onions, herbs and cheese and then cooked it inside the squash. John and I loved it and the kids did eat it but weren't too impressed. I think I'll be trying something similar again soon but should try to make it a bit more child-friendly.

I'm feeling slightly under pressure sewing-wise just now. I still haven't finished my poor mum's birthday present, altho' it is now started, I'm part-way through an apron for my sister-in-law's birthday (which is tomorrow), and have yet to start a picnic blanket for my wonderful cousin's wedding present plus a dress to wear to his wedding (plus a mock-up first coz I can't bear to waste my material with a stuff-up).

So - if I can get Nessie off my material the plans are as follows:

1. Abandon mum's present for now as its already late
2. Make the apron for K - tonight
3. Make a practice version of the dress for A's wedding (and hope it works and I like it!)
4. Assuming the dress-rehearsal went well make the picnic rug next
5. Make the dress
6. Make mum's birthday present
7. Attend wedding in a composed and unflustered manner

What's the chances of all this working to timescale? I've got until the end of May so I'm hopeful. If it all goes pear-shaped I can abandon the picninc blanket idea and buy something but I'd really like to give them a handmade present if possible.

And do you know what I'd rather be doing just now? Following Charlie's example::

P.S. Just realised that you may notice that Nessie only has one eye. The other had to be removed years ago after she was beaten up by another cat. She was quite young and disappeared for a few days ....[I was very very upset as I got her as a rescue kitten who wasn't supposed to be tameable. Because she was so wild, even after a few weeks in the centre she couldn't be handled, the rescue lady was planning to find her a farm to live on where she'd get fed but wouldn't need to interact with people. Anyway I fell in love with her and said I'd try and tame her - which I managed after a month of sitting beside her pen for hours every evening (I was single at the time!), and eventually holding her food on my hand etc etc. After that first month she has been the most trusting and friendly little cat ever (I can worm her single-handed as she never thinks to struggle)]....she crawled back eventually with one eye punctured and a few other scrapes. But the lack of an eye hasn't caused her any problems.

Sorry for that huge story, it kind of came out of nowhere.....she's just a very special little cat

Sorry to read you're not well and I'm sure the to do list doesn't help so I hope you manage to get some of it out of the way, I hate having a long list of things I want done when I'm not feeling great, especially as being a Mum is already a full time job.

Hope you feel better soon!

Periwinkle - Thanks, and don't feel sorry for Nessie she's a very spoilt happy little cat! No sign of babies up here either. Juliex

Beth - yeah....it generally all gets done, somehow. But the list does add pressure! Juliex

Nessie and Charlie are both gorgeous (we lost our Charlie on Monday - not unexpected but so gutting).

Great pics, hope you feel better soon!

Oh its horrible being poorly when looking after kids. My mum always says "mum's can't be ill" and in many ways its true! so I hope you make a quick recovery.
As for your to do list, you sound like me I always have the best intentions but the "lack of time" excuse nearly always comes into play!
Good luck especially with the apron.

Hope your cold clears soon, it's horrible not to feel 100% especially when you've so much to do.
I liked the story about Nessie. I'd still like to get another cat (we did have two at one point (rescued sisters), none now), though I don't think we're quite ready for one yet, maybe next year...

Kate - so sorry to hear about your Charlie. It is horrible even if you know its coming. Juliex

Anne - I love having cats around. We got Charlie about a year ago. We were determined only to get one from a rescue but I contacted loads of centres and none would hear of letting us have a young (under 1 yr old cat) because of us having young kids plus Kipper the dog - I can see where they were coming from but I didn't think it would be fair on Nessie to get an older cat. I eventually found a rescue in Fife which was much more open minded and they visited here to see what we were like and then just waited until they had a suitably tempered cat - hence we have Charlie the world's most laid back cat. He hasn't ever batted an eylelid at any of the strange goings on here! Juliex

Justine - I think that saying is sadly quite true...its such a pain not feeling right. Thanks for the good wishes. Juliex

Just popped in to say Hi
My sister had a cat which had to have one eye removed. It used to walk with its head to the side, good eye forward.
Hope that cold clears soon.

Hi Tramp - good to hear from you and I see that your bloggers block is lifting! Nessie doesn't do anything any differently from a two-eyed cat and she can still, unfortunately, catch mice and birds. Juliex

What beautiful cats. It's amazing how animals adapt isn't it? My neighbours dog has just had to have both eyes removed due to a horrible infection, and he's coping amazingly well.

Oh, and that dinner looks delicious!

Hiya Abby - you're right, animals are so good at getting on with things. Looking forward to some chick news from you soon, hopefully! Juliex

Both your kitties look lovely! That stuffed squash looks lovely too! I hope that you feel better soon. It always seems to be the way that a person falls ill when there are things to be done! Don't put yourself under stress. Do what you can do. Make sure you have plenty of time for yourself!!! Easier said than done I know! x

Thanks Simone - feeling lots better today after an 8pm bedtime last night! Juliex

Poppy,
Sorry things are so busy for you at the mo. I feel kind of guilty that it's my bro's wedding piling on the pressure. I'm excited about seeing your dress on the day, and SO impressed that you're going to make it.
Their wedding present can definitely be late if that takes any pressure off - they're going away for a couple of weeks then popping home before flying back to Mad, so if you had it done for when they're back from honeymoon that would be wonderful (they'll be coming north to M&D so could get it then).
Get well soon, and try not to stress. xx

Hi Nats - feeling much better - two nights going to bed at 8pm have helped a lot! I had worked out it would be better for the present to be late than the dress...always better to turn up in a completed garment I reckon. But, fingers crossed, I think it will all come together in time. I'm soo excited about Al's wedding so no need to feel any guilt at all (anyway its his fault not yours!). Have a lovely weekend. love Juliex
