Life's a picnic (blanket)

Woohoo. I have finished my (well, Al and Chris's) picnic blanket. Hopefully they will get it today. I have really enjoyed making it. It's so satisfying to make something that should be used for years and years and will hopefully be part of lots of happy memories. I do hope they like it.

On the downside it caused a terribly serious sewing injury. While I was quilting it (which was the bit I was most nervous about especially since I used thick polyester, which I normally don't like, wadding to make it nice and comfy) I developed a horrible case of quilters ankle! Is this a common sewing injury that everyone keeps quiet about?! Or is it just me? My right ankle, the one working the pedal (is that its name?), got really sore and uncomfortable - maybe because I cycled into a wall as a kid and tore the ligaments in that ankle? Anyway I think I'm going to have to learn to use my left foot for big quilting jobs in future!

I intended to quilt 1/4 inch inside each square but after doing the first one it looked a little like a hug (o) so I decided to alternate hugs and kisses (x) - since its for a newly married couple and with love from us. And two squares are quilted from the back, with a C and an A, where I appliqued their initials - I did this scrappy style in a contrast thread. I like the effect but the quilting on the letters is a bit wrinkly - probably lack of experience from me and maybe also because of the thickness?

Having sent that off that I've been on a bit of a roll. Today I finished mum's birthday present. At Christmas I gave her one of Beth's (the linen cat) lovely cushions as it really fitted with her existing, quite retro, cushions and window drapes (I mentioned this here along with a photo). For her birthday I thought I'd make her a tea cosy and some mats to bring the whole look together. I've cut out some of the flower shapes from mum's left-over material and then added more with fabrics from my own stash (the Erin McMorris orange one is used in Beth's cushion too). Hopefully mum will like them and forgive me for being so useless and late.

Once I had that present off my conscience I then had fun quickly putting together a pair of trousers and a skirt for Islay. I've used some very light-weight jersey (I've had it for years not sure where or why I got it) and just based the shape on existing clothes. The elastic on the trouser waist is far too loose (that's what comes from doing things quickly). I loved making these, even tho' they are quite rough and ready, I just enjoy so much running with an idea and giving it a go. I'll make other versions with a bit more care and attention......once I know whether she'll wear them!

Now I suspect I'll have a restless night while all the many, many ideas whirring around in my head fight with each other to see what will get made next. I think I may have a few days just 'playing' and not doing anything serious and then I'll tackle the blocks for our Fresh and Funky Bee. Lynette has come up with a brilliant challenge for our first month and my fabrics arrived yesterday - they are very bright and cheery. I'll post about what she's asked for next time as I think I've probably rattled on for long enough for now.

Loving the blanket and colour choice. I've spotted a couple of patterns I've got in the mix. Good choices :)

I'm running a PIF giveaway on my blog, do take a look, it'd be great to get some more entries!

Blimey you have been busy, puts me to shame as I haven't even been into the studio for quite some time (although I am frantically painting skirting, so not completely slacking).

Love it all, I would have been most pleased to receive such a great Wedding present, made especially nice by the time and thought you have invested in it. And I love your Mum's presents as well (thanks for the mention, it's much appreciated) I'm sure it will fit perfectly.

Right, now I feel guilty and the boys are driving me crazy so I might pop them in a bath and sit in the studio for a while :) Bethx

Tracey - thanks! Julie

Kate - I love the fabrics that went into the blanket. Thanks for the tip about the PIF (I had spotted it and had a good think about it) but i'm afraid I just don't want to commit myself to anything else just now. Such a shame. Have popped over to your blog to let you know. Juliex

Beth - my next task should really be some decorating. Most of our skirtings, and walls (horrible wallpaper), need serious amounts of work. Just the thought of starting them is scary.......but that's no excuse for just ignoring them, is it?!
Hope the boys stopped driving you crazy, (mine do all the time if that's any help?!) - altho' I had two on Angus' friends and one of Finn's over to play today after school and they were all fantastic with no squabbling and not too much silliness. Still can't quite believe it went so well. juliex

Periwinkle - I'm sure the shorts were fabby - I haven't tried making anything from old stuff yet....usually by the time I persuade John to stop wearing something its well past being repurposed! Juliex

All - thanks for the lovely comments.

Mrs Mad - I don't have a walking foot but think I should get one. I think it would make life easier but am not really very clued-up about it. That's the problem with learning recently and being self-taught and not having any sewing shops/classes nearby. Juliex

ooooh so much to comment on as I've just read all the posts I missed whilst offline so I do hope I remember all I wanted to say (and please excuse my "bulk-comment")...

The picnic blanket is just gorgeous - I had my first attempt at making a patchwork quilt this week and as I have never made a quilt or used a sewing machine other than the odd lesson at school, it didn't quite match up properly and I now have no idea how to do the quilting part of it... but it was fun to try and I look forward to one day being able to attempt something more exciting like what you have achieved!

Whoops about missing Father's Day... I gave my dad his present a week early as it was a football shirt and I knew he'd want to wear it from the beginning of the World Cup rather than only getting it halfway through - but I forgot to call him on the actual day!

Your walk looks just wonderful - I love the "older" forests and truly wish we had more of them as I would love to walk through real ancient forests. Trees are one of my most favourite things - I could sit for hours beneath a beech tree (my favourite tree of all) or wonder of the age of the oaks and yews we pass - in fact, Tim and I love going out with our guidebook to see what new trees we can learn to identify by heart...

My favourite flower is a harder one to choose, as I love so many of them. I can tell you my least favourites - peonies and wallflowers - but I still like them! I guess my favourites are wild-flowers like bluebells and poppies but I do love so many of them I couldn't possibly name them all here!

Love the picnic quilt - it is so nice to give things like that away - I am sure it will be really cherished. Wish I could give you some advice about your ankle - try hand quilting?!

Such fun projects! I love the ducks in the picnic blanket. I'm just sorry you got hurt in the process of making it!

Jo and Mandy- thanks for the comments about my ankle - its fine really, just got sore while I was quilting away! I'll just have to stop more often next time. Juliex

If you want to check it out see the seamstar blog - some great offers there currently too!! Many thanks for your offer to make something, Justine xx

Justine - just had a look at the tufted tweets - lovely colours, your kitchen will look great. I'll work on something with those colours in mind. Juliex

You've been a busy bee! I love that duck fabric...I have bought some in blue and orange but haven't decided what to do with it yet.

I don't get a sore foot when I'm quilting, I get a sore neck. It must be something about chair/table height and our positioning.

I don't know about quilters ankle, but I definitely get sewers shoulder! My left arm muscles are much tighter than the right from where I pull the fabric through the machine. My osteopath told me off last time as she said the whole left side of my body was turned forward slightly from too much sewing! I need to see her again on Thursday...think I'm going to be in trouble!!

The blanket is lovely, such a nice gift - always special to receive something someone has made themselves, especially when it's as nice as your blanket!

I've been saving A's summer dresses to cut up and turn into a quilt for her. I don't really like sewing though which may be a problem when I eventually get started on it!

Julie said...

Beth- hope your osteo is able to balance you up a bit. I don't know what we can do about these various niggles and aches - stopping sewing obviousky isn't going to happen! Juliex

Abby -Oops - the comment above is supposed to say Abby not Beth!

Anne - what a lovely idea to use her summer dresses, you never know you may end up liking sewing! Juliex
