I've well and truly stuffed up today. I got the wrong day for Father's Day - I had it all fixed for next Sunday. John seemed a bit grouchy this morning and then about 1130 said, all nonchalantly, that he'd heard on the radio that he should be having breakfast in bed today. Oh dear, oops and oops again. I apologised profusely and hung my head in shame. The boys knew it was today, apparently, but hadn't said anything to me and haven't brought anything home from school - can't rely on teachers or offspring anymore obviously. Islay did bring a card home from nursery but I assumed it was just extra-organised. I'll be apologising to dad later too.
On a happier note we're having a fun, but busy, weekend. We went to the Borders Book Festival in Melrose yesterday. It was lovely. We bought a family day pass and went to a few sessions, including Michael Morpurgo, and a great rhyme-time workshop for Islay.
From there we visited my lovely aunt and uncle and briefly caught up with my fabby cousin Nats too. We exchanged photos and memories from Al's wedding. We love visiting their house in the Borders, not just because they are so fun, but because they have lots of wonderful space for running wild (which is what our kids do best).
Our hens are now permanent residents there too and it was good to see them. We tried three bantams in our tiny garden but it was just too small to cope and once they started destroying my pot plants I'm afraid we had to work out alternative accommodation. We were really sad to part with them but they are extremely happy in their new home. The kids were on official egg collecting duty which they love (in the past they have collected eggs that have already been date-labelled, having been hastily returned to the hen house just before we arrived, but the kids didn't notice!).
We visited their galloway and belted galloway cows and calves - they are not the calmest of breeds but Islay was able to give Florence a quick stroke before she (the cow that is!) got unsettled.
Today we had a walk up at Hopes reservoir in the Lammermuir Hills. The boys, especially Finn, walk really well and we're trying to help Islay find her walking legs...we didn't get as far as we'd have ideally liked but she is getting better.
So, busy week coming up - there's only another 9 school days until the summer holidays. I think the kids really need a break. But first we have to get thro' all the end of term stuff and sometimes that can seem like a bit of a battle. I'm sure we'll be fine and there'll be some lovely moments like Finn's P3 show - the last he'll have before he moves up to the big boy P4-7 school after the summer. How did that happen its no time since he was a little four year old starting P1?

Woops missing Fathers day ! The book festival sounds really good, Freya loves Micheal Morpurgo and has read most of his books. Your children break up early, we still have four weeks, don't yours go back to scholl earlier though ?
oops.
(tell him at least he didn't have to get up at 4 am to go work 16 hours today...we'll be celebrating another day too).

Love the farm pictures! Good luck with the end of the school year! :)
Sounds like a wonderful weekend. I did manage Fathers day before heading out to the Boot Sale!
Looks like you guys had a great weekend. School finishes early in England for us too 21 July and back on 1st September. The boys have been to FIL farm whilst I was at the boot sale
You're soo lucky having all that open space for your kids to roam on! I so wish that we had land and space, the outdoor life must be great!!
Maria - Yes we'll be back to school in late August. It always feels odd going back when I know everyone down south is still off. Juliex
Tracey - we're going to celebrate another day too - next Sunday as I had originally expected. Hope you have a lovely time. What kind of farming does your husband have? Juliex
Mrs Mad - hope the boot sale was successful. Bet the boys had a lovely time. Juliex
Justine - we're very lucky having relatives with so much space, if only we had more too. But being able to visit my aunt and uncle and my mum and dad is brilliant. Juliex
Never mind... Fathers get loved 365 days a year (and pampered!) so don't feel bad about it. Lovely photos! That look like a really fun day. Know what you mean with end of term... can't wait for it all to be over!
