We've been thinking for a while that Islay might be big enough to make it up a 'proper' hill. It's something that John and I love, and have only really managed to do separately since we've had the children, and we were pretty certain the boys would be fine.
Islay was quite daunted at first as there's no gentle warm up, you start heading uphill fairly steeply right from the loch shore. And it is a made path (it is such an accessible hill it gets loads of walkers and the best way to reduce erosion is for a man-made path - many, possibly most, munros have little or no path for most of the route which is one of the wonderful things for people like me who like a bit of wilderness and solitude - possibly also known as antisocial!) which makes it harder for little legs like Islay's. Just look at the stone step she's about to negotiate in the picture above - she had to climb over it and that's what much of the way up is like.

We didn't ever stop for long as there was a fair few midges who clustered in for a free meal whenever we weren't moving. They really aren't a lot of fun.

And here's a ptarmigan spotted on the ridge! It is a fairly scarce mountain bird related to the red grouse. They go white in the winter and keep a white tummy all year. This one was a male and had his jaunty red comb in full view, when I eventually managed to catch him standing still!
I haven't done anything to these photos, that's just the way he looked. I guess the sun may have been shining off his comb to make it so bright.
By the last hour or so Islay was getting very tired, the boys were too but had a bit more stamina and strength, but she didn't ask for a carry and made it all the way under her own steam. We were so proud of them all for making it, and Katie was happy in the back pack too - it is so good to feel we can share our love of hillwalking with them. I did worry that we needed to be careful not to put any of them off but they all loved it. Which hill next?!

Looks like a beautiful day!
Sarah, I still get all smiley when I think about it. A great day! Juliex
Fantastic, well done Islay! She's beaten me. Hubby and I were going to climb Ben Lomond (in the time before kids) but we got there too late in the day, had a big row, and went home again!
The views are lovely. We'll try again when N's a bit bigger.
Amazing view, I'd love to see them for myself!
A couple of super family photos too and how great to see a ptarmigan!

We have sworn that our 'next' trip to Western Europe will be England Ireland Scotland Wales . . .
Anne - I guess it is pretty much on your doorstep.....just remember to start earlier next time, I'm sure A and N would love it! Juliex

Cat - we would love to see you on your next visit. Please do come to GB! Juliex
Oh I am very envious, it looks so beautiful. Sadly M doesn't do walking (he has 2 slipped discs and so it can get uncomfortable, he is too busy cycling anyway) but I LOVE walking so I often go on my own. I hope to get the boys up some of the bigger hills when we are next in Yorkshire, I'll also be using the jelly baby bribe for help when needed ;)
Lovely photos.

Beth - poor M, and you too. Jelly babies are fantastic for this sort of thing and pretty yummy for grown-ups too! Juliex
So beautiful and refreshing to just be able to take advantage of the wonderful views.
Jen - yes, beautiful views. Juliex
Oh wow Julie - what an amazing climb and the views are just fabulous....well worth the effort and your little one did so well.
Nina xxx
Nina - the views are what makes all the effort sooo worthwhile! Juliex
We learnt all about Munros last week while in Scotland and saw many of them. What a great achievement for your Dad to have completed them all and how wonderful that the children are following in his footsteps. I will appreciate your photos even more than I did before having visited Scotland. Your views from the top are amazing.
