As you'll probably have gathered by now one of our favourite things is walking, and, if we aren't walking, being outside in one form or another. I grew up in an active family and so on our recent holiday with my parents, brother and his family we naturally spend quite a lot of time trying to find good places to walk!
Given that there's several fairly headstrong people amongst us - I'm not going to name names, it would be a very long list! - decisions can take a fair bit of negotiation. Especially when there's 6 children to be considered too.One of the best walks we found was along the coast from the village of Balintore. It is a lovely little sleepy village which really looks as if it has forgotten to keep up with the modern world.
And the beach heading north from the village was pretty close to perfection.
Sand, rocks, sea, coastal grassland...........and we even had some sunshine. We have been seriously short of sun although it is slightly consoling to know that the same is true for almost everyone else in Britain.
We found an old winch for pulling up nets - we think for netting salmon but we weren't certain. It looked like the netting is still active, with nets hanging out to dry on huge'washing lines', lines of buoys marking nets in the water and boats ready to bring them in.
My brother and his family had to leave part way through the week and then we had a slightly more adventurous walk up a hill (it was actually fairly adventurous as we landed ourselves in a glen in the midst of hydro-electric construction and further up the peaceful hillwalking was somewhat marred by the on-going installation of windturbines. Our OS map was only a year or two old but, naturally, it didn't have these current developments marked).

And - just because I love her funny little face - here's Katie at almost 10 months.

WE too love walking. There's nothing better than being out in the fresh air. The beach looks wonderful as does your daughter in the last photo!
Have a great week.

Hi Julie,
I love your pictures of the sea they feel different to down here but still look beautiful and so empty.
Katie is so cute too!

You should be gettin a bung from Scottish Tourist Board.... Your photos are always stunning, and I just dont know how you always manage to get such beautiful days!!
Great photos, looks like your walks were lots of fun.
What a beautiful beach. I grew up in Southern California where the beaches seemed to be either all sand or all rock - never that nice combination of both.
The sky looks lovely in the "sleeping Dad" photo - and Katie looks delightful as always. :)
That looks like a beautiful walk! It reminds me of walking along the coast in Western Ross. Loved it there!
It looks really lovely! I am very excited about the walks I have planned for our Yorkshire holiday (good walks in this part of Kent are hard to find, sadly), I wish I could get all the family involved, I plan to drag the boys along on a few, but I know M wont come. Shame. Lovely photos :) Bethx
beautiful scenery and I adore the little smile!
Just my sort of thing too! Looks like a lovely spot, is it Scotland? As a child we used to holiday on the West Coast in a little croft we had to walk to, 2 miles from the end of the road. Perhaps that's where my love of wild places and walking began?
How wonderful to share a beautiful walk with family (and us). Love the way that the sun is catching the top of the water ripples.
I think one of our best investments has been proper walking boots for the children. So much easier to enjoy a walk if your feet are comfortable. Happy times.
Such beautiful coastline - I'm glad you all came to a decision the walk looks fabulous.
Happy holidays,
Nina xxx

Oh how wonderful!
We haven't been on nearly enough walks since I fell pregnant and we really need to rectify that as being out in nature makes us all feel so much better :)
hello Julie, I loved this post especially because of the picture on the top of the hill with all the family sitting about. took me right back to my childhood on holiday up in the highlands, and i've seen pictures of my parents doing the same when they were young. lovely stuff! (thanks for your kind comment on my blog...I should leave more comments here!)
