The pattern is from Purl Bee and as much as I love the yarn they have used there's no way I could justify buying from overseas just for a wee snake for a wee girl. I popped down to my local shop not expecting to find anything at all similar - but I did. Jo, who owns The Bead Shop Scotland**, has recently started stocking a great wool selection and in amongst it all was some Rowan Purelife which was just perfect for this project. One of the things that attracted me to making the snake was his natural colours. This is undyed British wool, from British sheep breeds, using its natural colours to create a yarn with subtle colour contrast. I grew up with British sheep and have been involved in shearing them many times so getting to use the end product like this had me pretty excited!
Mr Sssnakey isn't as long as he should be, probably about half the recommended length. But given my snail-like knitting it was either that or wait until next Christmas. I'm not good at waiting.
I have been hearing on the radio today that there may be some snow on the way. I do hope so. Apologies to you if you aren't a fan or if it makes life difficult.......I just love snow - even if it does mean digging the car out and not being able to use the pushchair, and a host of other hassles.
* Knitting doesn't come easily for me, I don't really know why. With sewing I'm happy to experiment and if I do check out a new technique, rather than just bashing ahead and making it up as I go along, I'll generally just refer to it once before mastering it. Knitting........not so much. I can't cast on without looking up the method, I can now knit and purl confidently but increasing and decreasing sees me pulling out my notes almost every time (I think I now have the hang of casting off and felt ever so proud to be able to cast off Mr Sssnakey without looking it up!) and anything more than that would definitely need some referencing. Why? I wish I knew what the problem is. Does anyone else have a similar stumbling block?
** When we first moved here John was delighted to spot The Bread Shop and equally disgusted to discover it was actually a shop selling beads!

Your snake turned out wonderful. I bet Katie loved it. I honestly believe that the more you knit the easier it will become. It's fairly repetitive. Maybe a few more snakes (hee, hee.) I've been knitting decades and I'm still learning new methods.
There seem to be more and more UK natural balls of wool available. Named breeds as well. Love the natural colours.
I love Mr Snake and I'm sure Katie did too. The yarn is gorgeous... would make lovely sweaters. I've got stuff from Purl Bee before, they have some great stuff. Julie x
I felt much the same way about knitting. Too much counting and keeping track of where I was... its so much more obvious with sewing! Love Mr Snakesy, and the yarn was a perfect choice, he's a grass snake :-) They're short!
Nooo, no snow yet, well not tomorrow anyway, I have a new car to pick up in Stirling!
Loving Mr Snakey though :oD
Your snake looks so good.I have just taken up knitting again after a break of over 25 years. I do find it easier than sewing!
I had to smile at John's disappointment over the bread shop, you wouldn't expect them to be selling beads!

What a nice woolly snake - his little beady eyes are perfect. Is he a long I cord with a head?
I just won some lovely British yarn from Annie at Knitsofacto - I can see the fascination with natural sheep's wool.
I have the exact same problems with knitting. Perhaps it's due to lack of practice - or lack of deep interest. Or maybe it's a missing skill set? Knitting seems very laborious, where other crafts do not.
P.S. Mr. M would feel the same about Bread vs. Beads. He's a gluten fiend.
Hi Julie, Mr Snake is very cute, it must've taken some really hard work to make him, but I love the tones of grey in the wool, I'm sure he made a delightful Christmas present! Your not alone with finding knitting tricky, I have been shown lots of times but it doesn't come naturally to me and I forget everything...you should definatly keep going though because it is looking very good :) safxxx
I think Mr Snakey looks really cute. The way you describe your knitting is how I would describe my sewing. There are still the odd things I check with knitting so I wouldn't worry about it :-)
Great yarn choice, and I love Mr. S :)
I'm a snow fan too, and we now have plenty! Did it get to you?
I'm so rubbish at knitting - how easy do you say?!
Anything in a continuous straight line is about my limit.
Have a fabulous weekend,
Nina x
