New Year's Day 2013 - a picnic in the sunshine

I thought I'd better wish you a Happy New Year before it is too late to consider it a new year any more.  I have to confess that I'm already feeling as if we've been in 2013 for quite a while.  Not for any reason other than having a busy, noisy and (mostly) happy family - time goes by very fast when living with my lot!
Our New Year's Day was cold and sunny - perfect for our now customary walk and picnic.  With temperatures barely above freezing it had to include something hot so we made a flask of hot chocolate and cooked baked beans and sausages at our chosen spot.  Perfect.

The children play so well together outside.  They can do indoors too, but often one will be left out or they will begin squabbling after a while.  Perfectly normal, of course, but outdoors they tend to play as a threesome and I love that their games are mostly made up on the spot and evolve over the time we're out.  It won't be long before Katie joins in properly too.  This time she was happy to grub around picking strands of grass, examine fir cones and toddling as much as she could in all her layers.

Now we're beginning to prepare for the end of the holidays.  We have had such a good time but one or two of us would definitely benefit from a return to school and a little more routine.  Poor Islay was off for the last week of term, including the day of her birthday and her school party, so she is really looking forward to catching up with friends now that she is six.

I remember that last year I set a few aims for the year.  I haven't looked back over them yet but I'd like to and then have a think about what I want to achieve for this year.  It could be an interesting one - I have just completed a couple of job applications.  I won't be looking after my niece and nephew after April and, as well as missing them, I need to find something else to keep me busy and bring in a little more money.  I have a feeling it won't be too easy but I won't get anywhere with it unless I try.

So, Happy New Year 2013 to you.  I'm looking forward to another year with my lovely and inspiring blog friends - best wishes to you all.

happy new year! What a lovely start to 2013, looks like a very enjoyable walk. We've had barely any sunshine here for so long. The best we get is a few sunny spells between grey and rain!

Happy New Year. It looks like a lovely walk, even though cold, at least it's bright, I think we have seen the sun once in the last couple of weeks. Julie x

Mine are also so much better together when we are outside. I bought Drew a bike rack for the car, so I foresee lots more outside play and also picnics etc! Happy new year to you and your lovely family

Katie's examination of pine cones has reminded me that you don't have to walk for miles to enjoy a nature walk. Must schedule a picnic in the woods for my lot.

Happy New Year and good luck with the job applications.
