So far we're having a good year for baby girls. I wanted to make gifts for two special wee girls but just didn't have the chance, with all the moving shenanigans, to sew up cute wee trousers or dresses (which would have been really fun). Since I really did want to make them something I had to rely on my fledgling knitting skills........somewhat risky but I think I pulled it off.
I went back to the Boyfriend Hat pattern having successfully adapted it for John. I played around with the basic pattern until I got a length and depth of hat that seemed right. I used one of Katie's hats as a template and aimed for 6 to 18 month size.
The yarn is Rowan Kid Classic (a lambswool and mohair mix - I wanted these hats to be very soft) and I knit double with Feather and Tearose. I decided I couldn't go too far wrong with a colour as pretty as Tearose for baby girls! Ravelled here.
Clearly Katie is a little big for the hats, but that is as it should be as she is two and a half, and despite the rather odd perched-on-top look she was very happy to model for me (long may that continue) - I wasn't rash enough to ask her to stay still, I just chased her around with the camera while she scooted.
I raided my stock for bibs to go with the hat for my cousin's wee girl. There wasn't a lot of point sending bibs for Sarah's baby. Sarah and her mum came to my bib class at The Stitch Gathering and I know they have since made some for Molly - so a couple of favourite lotions were sent off with Molly's hat instead.
Other random bits and pieces::
:: John set off for his new job in Inverness on Monday, and he tells me his bike commute this morning (from Avoch, on the Black Isle, to Inverness) was simply stunning
:: we think we may be making progress on the house - fingers crossed
:: we may also have somewhere to buy.......with only a few homeless days in between
:: if it all falls into place we will be moving very soon, scarily soon in fact, but we can't actually do anything until things firm-up on our house
:: the sun is shining, isn't it wonderful?
:: Charlie, the cat, is determined to sit on my knee while I type, he is not a help but he is lovely
:: I have made this dip for the kids' snack this afternoon
:: I want to try making gorse flower and honey icecream
:: this article really has me thinking, I try to give my kids a fair bit of freedom, and believe it is very important, but I think I may not be going nearly far enough.....this article is very thought provoking. Please do read it. What do you think?
I do hope that the sun is shining with you too. I'll be back as soon as possible with a little giveaway.

It sounds like it really is all coming together for you, I'm so pleased and will keep my fingers crossed the house sale/buying part goes well. Gorse flower and honey ice cream...sounds very interesting, I shall be very curious to know how it turns out! Bethx
loved our pressies thank you so much. excited for you with your move, maybe we can pack our men off on their bikes this summer and have a day sewing?!
brilliant article btw, wish there were "parks" like that in every town.
Oh I have been wondering about the house move and all that jazz. The hat is adorable and that article has got me wondering if I am not free range enough with my parenting. Although the boys both walk to and from school now ( at nearly 8 and 9) and I( know a lot of the parents think I am mad letting them have that much freedom.
I love this knitted little pink hat, it looks so lovely on Katie, I'm sure it will be happily received :) I do hope it all goes smoothly on the moving front for you all, it sounds like it is going well, wishing you lots of luck, it'll be worth it in the end, safxxx
I did wonder why the hat was perched on Katie's head, then you explained about the size! Glad the house move seems to be working out, I will keep my fingers crossed for you. Your link to the article was very interesting. My children are grown up now so it's irrelevant for me, but I certainly had a lot more freedom as a child than I gave my children. Some things have changed though, the amount of cars on the road is much greater for example. It also depends on whether you live in the country or in a town/city I think.
Katie looks so cute in your lovely ribbed hat! I will keep my fingers crossed that everything works out for you with the move. John's journey to work sounds wonderful! Loved all those ideas for gorse flowers! I will have to go and pick some. Sarah x
Argh, I just lost about an hour on that article at the end!
In the 80s when I was 'out playing' I spent my time on building sites and roaming fields and building dens and climbing trees and jumping off bridges and lying in the middle of the road and so many other things my parents had no idea about. It was fabulous! The only thing I had to fear was coming home with permanently ruined clothes from whatever the activity du jour had been, because we didn't have the money to replace them.
Then, god help us, in the 90s I went to high school and as an 11 year old I caught a train on my own with 3 other same aged friends, for 25 minutes, and THEN we walked 2 miles across town crossing streets and choosing whatever route we fancied, including cutting through the shopping centre and running up the down escalators (no-one cares at 8:30 in the morning when you do that)
Funnily enough, the kids round here roam the streets and build their own forts (because their parents are too lazy to walk them to the park, but won't let the cross the big main road between us and the play ground), and seem to be living a similar life. Except the screaming. I never remember standing screaming at my friends, or just shrieking at the top of my little lungs just because I could. That's new. That I could live without... o.O
Loved the article, but I knew about The Land, it's within my local authority, although miles away on the opposite boundary. I gave our kids a mass of freedom, although I had particular sticking points, e.g. they were expected to push their bikes to the blind corner down the lane and then only ride from their (they probably didn't bother, I wasn't usually looking!) It's all about which risks you find acceptable I guess. We're by the river here and they played by and in the river, but I kept them home when it was in flood. I can't see I'd be doing things any differently if I had younger children now. Whatever happened to common sense is what I always wonder. Great link, thanks Julie. And good luck with the move x
My gran always used to knit our gloves, hats, scarves etc. I am useless at knitting so miss out now. very cute hat for a very cute baby. x
