On our last full day of holiday we all had a trip up
Schiehallion* which is one of Scotland's most distinct and well-known
munros. After Islay's impressive walking on
Ben Lomond last year we were sure she'd be able to get up Schiehallion - and she did, in real style, with only a bit of a struggle on the last few hundred metres of big rough boulders. The boys just set off without a thought and really didn't seem to have to put in effort at all. Us older people found it a little hot once we had climbed up above the low lying cloud. By the time we reached the top the cloud had burnt off and the views were wonderful.

Dad took the boys off on a big boy hillwalking trip on the day John came home. They had a great day and took in a couple of big hills. They were out for a good 6 or 7 hours and I think my boys slept well that night!
Sorry for the thick and fast blog posts, seems a little strange to post on consecutive days - just trying to tidy up before the big trip to London and France - I think holiday fever is kicking in and I am feeling very lucky for all these trips. Take care, will be back soon!

Schiehallion is owned and managed by the
John Muir Trust - a charity dedicated to protecting wild places. They own and care for some of the UK's most stunning wild land and take their inspiration from John Muir - who is the Scots-born founder of the modern conservation movement and is sometimes referred to as the father of North America's national parks having been influential in the formation of several. John and I last walked up Schiehallion around 11 years ago, not long after the Trust took over the hill - and their work to create a sustainable footpath is very impressive. As an accessible hill it gets thousands of walkers each year and the hillside was becoming very eroded. Now, however, there is one, very natural looking, path which the vast majority of visitors seem to be using.....leaving the rest of the hill in it's beautiful and wild state.

I bet the boys had a great day with their Grandpa, thats what memories are made out of days like that.
Wow Julie, this walk is so beautful, you and your family must've enjoyed it so much :) I love the picture of the summit and your children look happy together, especially like the pic of Katie walking down the hill, very sweet! Ahh, I've holidayed at the bottom, but never made it to the top (nearly did, but we were hungover *ahem*)
My kind of walk there, I'd love some proper 'hills' to get up around here and I'm very, very impressed with Islay's effort, I'd struggle to get the boys up there, actually that's not very fair, they would go but they tend to moan a lot after the first few miles (I have to take smartie bribes etc).
